Axial Rotation and Lateral Flexion
Axial Rotation and Lateral Flexion can be done simply with the press of a button and manipulation of the guide bar at the rear of the pelvic section. The doctor or practitioner can move the flexing section to its proper position such as lateral flexion or axial rotation. This is unlike other units that have a direct and straight pull only. Decompression and Scoliosis

Usually at my seminars or other venues I always get asked will decompression therapy help patients with scoliosis.

My answer is always a political “yes”, “no”, “maybe”. Usually leaving the poor doctor befuddled until I explain in more detail.

When patients present to our clinic with a scoliosis (defined as a lateral curve 10 deg or more) and this has caused one of their discs to degenerate due to the unnatural biomechanical forces placed on the spine we usually treat the disc pathology first, especially if the involved disc is at the apex of the curve and or is really symptomatic. Once the patient is gaining a “close to” normal ROM in the involved area without an increase pain then that is our que to start working on the scoliosis.

We normally observe symptomatic changes within the first 6-8 visits and start to see real gains in pain reduction and increase in ROM around 10-12^th visits. Then we usually start working with the mirror image protocol while decompressing.  With our particular brand of decompression table we can actually flex, extend, lat bend, and axial rotate so as to allow us to mirror the scoliosis. After decompression we then have the patient work with head, hip, shoulder weights as well as vibrational therapy.

We have found that isometric exercises work best for this type of combo care, as well as mirror image stretching post exercise. We have also observed that the muscles on the convex side of the curve respond better to higher vibration frequencies and lower frequencies on the convex side. We usually apply this (vibration via instrumentation) prior to exercises and stretches.

So to answer the question yes decompression will help with scoliosis patients “if” they have a combo disc pathology along with the scoliosis. Otherwise we treat our Scoliosis patients separately than our decompression patients. The great thing is both categories will become chiropractic patients for life.
