If you are a parent, coach, athletic trainer, physical therapist or even a doctor that is entrusted with the safety of young athletes playing contact sports then pay attention to the sign of a head injury. Even a slight blow to the head can be the start of a progressive head injury. We all hear about the retired NFL players of 20-30 years ago that now are suffering from memory loss and dementia along with a host of other neurological and cognitive health issues. Don’t let that happen to young athletes under your care. Make sure all equipment is in good condition and fits properly. An old ill fitted football helmet is a bomb waiting to explode. On the football field make sure that proper tackling techniques are observed and players are taught how to protect themselves. If an athlete does sustain a blow to the head be aware of the signs and symptoms of a head injury. Watch out for disorientation, nausea and vomiting, headaches and listlessness. Never assume the athlete is OK, always seek appropriate medical attention for any suspected head injury for any athlete at any level in any sport. Prudent action can help your athletes avoid cognitive problems later in life.
